Day One: WEDNESDAY – September 9
Into the Douro We Go!

We gather in Porto with our driver and your travel hosts, Angela Kallsen, Jason Kallsen, and Ryan Opaz, and we point ourselves inland. The city gradually gives way to rolling hills, and soon the hills become mountains, and then suddenly — there it is — the Douro Valley: terraces carved by hand, impossibly steep, a landscape that feels like it remembers every century of human effort poured into it.

On the way, we’ll enjoy either a farm-to-table lunch or a winery visit with a meal, depending on what aligns best with the season. Either option: relaxed, local, delicious.

By afternoon we arrive at Vila Galé Douro Vineyards, a peaceful rural hideaway tucked between vineyards and river. This is your home for the next few nights — big views, quiet evenings, and the hum of the river nearby.

Evening: Completely open. Wander, journal, nap, drink some wine, stare at the mountains — choose your own adventure. A great moment to absorb where you are, and get ready for an amazing week ahead.

THURSDAY – September 10
Wine & Soul + A Slow Float on the Douro

We start with Wine & Soul, a small, heartfelt winery in the heart of the Pinhão Valley. It’s run by partners in both wine and life — the kind of people who farm with intention and talk about vines like they’re family. Expect wines with story, framed by the land they come from.

Lunch is on the terrace, with the valley unfolding around us.

Then we head to the river for a private boat cruise — the kind of afternoon that invites deep breathing and slow moments. The Douro from the water is cinematic and an amazing way to experience the region. If the weather plays nice, yes, there will be a chance to swim in the river — bring your suit!

Return to the hotel. Evening at your pace.

FRIDAY – September 11
Harvest Day: The Real Work (The Fun Work)

Today we head to Quevedo, a younger family winery with deep Port-making roots. They represent the new Douro — confident, authentic, not in a hurry, and quietly redefining what this region can be.

We’ll walk vineyards, taste wines, and enjoy a harvest lunch.

Then — the moment you’ll remember — it’s time to stomp grapes. Yes, with your feet. Yes, it’s exactly as joyful and silly and meaningful as it sounds. Wear shorts you don’t mind staining purple. You will laugh. You will slip. You will remember it forever … we’ll take photos so you don’t have to!

Dinner is a Douro BBQ — smoky, rustic, delicious — eaten outdoors if the night cooperates.

Return to the hotel tired in the best possible way. Night at your leisure.

SATURDAY – September 12
The River by Train + The Medieval Hilltop of Marialva 

We check out and head to Pinhão’s little train station for one of Europe’s most scenic rail stretches. The tracks hug the river. It feels timeless.

Your luggage goes by van. You ride like a poet.

We disembark in Pocinho, rejoin our driver, and continue deeper inland — a land of old stone villages and wild ridges — stopping for a winery lunch on the way.

Then we arrive in the ancient hilltop village of Marialva, and settle into Casas do Côro — part boutique hotel, part lived-in village restoration project. Relax, exhale, wander among stone alleyways and castle walls. 

Dinner at the hotel — warm, seasonal, beautifully paired.

SUNDAY – September 13
The River Côa + The New Frontier Winemakers

We head to Vila Nova de Foz Côa for lunch overlooking the river valley, where prehistoric art and modern life intersect.

Then we continue to Arribas Wine Company — one of Portugal’s most exciting tiny producers. These are thoughtful, slightly renegade winemakers working on the edge of the Spanish border, in vineyards that feel untouched and ancient.

Expect personality, laughter, and wines with identity — nothing generic here.

Return to Marialva to enjoy the quiet nighttime village atmosphere — maybe stars, maybe crickets, maybe the unforgettable feeling of being somewhere deeply real.

MONDAY – September 14
Into the Dão: Granite, Forest, Elegance

We travel south into the Dão region — sometimes called the Burgundy of Portugal for its finesse, structure, and sense of place. Tall pine forests, granite soils, gentle mountains.

Our first stop is Textura Wines, where the focus is organic farming and wines that whisper complexity rather than shout it. Lunch among the vines, with wines that reflect patience and restraint.

Then to Quinta dos Roques, a family estate with personality and joy — the kind of visit where you end up laughing more than you expected.

Return to Marialva for dinner and a restful evening.

Overnight: Casas do Côro

TUESDAY – September 15
The Road Back to Porto

We check out and begin our return toward Porto, but not without one more stop — Casa de Mouraz — where forests and vineyards intermingle and the wines taste like the land smells: wild, clean, resonant.

Lunch and tasting here closes the countryside portion of our journey.

Then we arrive in Porto, checking into the Altis Porto Hotel, centrally located for walking and wandering.

WEDNESDAY – September 16
Port Cellars, theLAB, and the Soul of Porto

We begin in Vila Nova de Gaia at Poças, a century-old family Port house. This is history you can feel — wood, stone, slow time. We enjoy a private cellar tour and a chef-led lunch in a reserved room.

Then we head to theLAB, one of the most interesting beverage experiences in Portugal — a tasting designed around curiosity, flavor exploration, and the joy of discovery. Wine, vermouth, cider, botanicals, non-alcoholic craft — it’s all about the sensory journey.

Rest of the evening at your leisure. 

THURSDAY – September 17
Historic Porto and Farewell Lunch

We will gather in the morning for a stroll through the historic center of Porto, seeing many of the well-known highlights as well as under-the-tourist-radar gems. 

We finish with a farewell lunch — a final toast to everything we’ve seen, tasted, learned, and shared.

Evening open for one last glass on your own terms.

What makes this trip unique

We’re designing this tour to be the most immersive tour of the Douro, Dão, and Porto that we could conceive, showcasing the authentic and family-driven side of this country while avoiding the tourist trappings of modern tourism-driven Portugal.

The loss of small, and family run businesses has become a real problem as skyrocketing real estate values has changed this region and brought in big money from the outside. The influx of tourism and attention has been good for the economy overall (of course), but has had a devastating impact on what people like us would call the “real Portugal.”

With our experience and contacts, you’re going be immersed into Portugal in way other tours simply can’t do. Everyone we are visiting are our friends, we know their families, the names of their pets. Expect the unexpected on this journey.
